Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg – focus on three countries

An amazing number of tremendous short films have been produced in Belgium and the Netherlands in recent years. Luxembourg, meanwhile, has not been quite as active – for reasons which are easy to understand – but what kind of title would that have made: Focus on BeNe. Exactly.
Catch my drift? So we all sat down, considered our options once more and eventually reached the right decision – as we think you’ll agree.
We have put together six programme blocks in total, restricting ourselves – roughly – to films from the last 25 years in order to favour pieces of work which still have a pulse rather than those which are more probably museum-bound. What’s more, the selection we are presenting is a cross-section of the range and variety on offer in the rest of the festival programme.

Many of the cultural peculiarities which we have come to associate with each of these countries also crop up in the short films they produce – although, if all that comes to mind is chips, caravans and money-laundering, then you should probably try again. And again. And, no doubt, yet again.
Here’s another thing: is it of any benefit to directors to work in a constitutional monarchy as opposed to a republic? Who knows? But then again, we’ve all had a chance to view the Focus on Norway, Denmark and Spain programme, perhaps we should gather together and address the question.

We would like to extend our very warm thanks to all the different institutions, festivals and of course individuals for the marvellous support they gave us as we went
about researching this programme.
