Indonesia is not exactly well-known for its cinematic output. Commer-cial films are made almost exclusively for domestic television consumption and rarely break out of the soft-soap romantic TV-novella format. However, following the political reforms introduced in 1998, for the first time an independent movement could take shape which turned to film as a means of expressing its ideas. Short films have so far been able to avoid the harsh gaze of the censorship authorities. With strictly limited resources, very special pieces of work are being produced bringing the lives of ordinary citizes to the screen or taking a bare-faced look at the history of the most populous Islamic country on the planet. Several of these films will be pre-sented by Indonesian filmmaker and festival organiser Lulu Ratna who will be serving on the jury for the No Budget competition category at this years festival.
