The Virtual Light (formerly BitfilmFestival) segment has been presenting digital short films and computer-generated animation as part of the International Short Film Festival Hamburg since 1995. Loyal to the festival’s original no-budget concept, a forum is created here for artists who use relatively cheap personal computers to discover their own methods of expression in the field. Over the years, the programme has opened itself up to interesting however more expensive and expansve short and animated films.

The spectrum takes in collage-based productions making use of the computer’s creative potential in terms of the mixing and distortion of material such as found footage, drawings, photos, audio material and texts.

It covers costly High-End computer animation demonstrating the latest developments in the creation of 3D worlds and also includes entertaining short cartoons produced thanks to typical internet tools such as Shockwave or Flash.
