International Competition

And that's true for all of our programmes, not only for the International Competition. The selection committee viewed, filtered, heated and hydro-extracted all 2,200 entries, until an end was in sight.

Technocratic language somehow seems more suitable for describing this process than the film studies vocabulary that keeps buzzing in my ear. Because we don't want these words to develop a life of their own and form clichéd phrases, do we?

We'd rather take it film by film. And we're not pessimistic, no, not at all.

As the Austrian essayist and playwright Karl Krauss once said: "An artist is somebody who can transform a solution into a riddle." This has probably been one of the guiding principles of the selection process. I'm sure Jonathan Meese, the current wunderkind of the German art world, put it even more precisely, but we don't want to blow anybody's trumpet here, do we?

In the International Competition, a jury awards the Hamburg Short Film Award (3,000 euros) and the François Ode Award (1,500 euros) – an honorary prize for special humantitarian expression (EUR 1,500).

In addition, the Škoda Audience Award (1,500 euros) will also be awarded to the film which the audience chooses as their favourite in the International Competition.

Last but not least one of the films will receive the arte Short Film Award donated by the Franco-German tv station. For every minute in length, the authors of the winning film will receive 450 euros, and the film will be broadcast in one of arte’s short film programmes.
