German Competition
Well Spotted.
This years German competition is uncovering contemporary points of view and uncloaking attitudes. There will be plenty to see in little time: narrative shorts, animated film noir puppets, splatter animations, experimental documentaries and a technological education film. 42 different attitudes are coming in 42 different forms. The least common denominator of the shorts is their economical dramaturgy and great variety of shapes.
But the points of view behind these works are closer to each other than one might think. In these five programmes, societal and aesthetical patterns, gently discovered and explored by the filmmakers, emerge out of the variety of forms. The filmmakers show their attitude with their reserved approach towards commenting events.
This observant view does not only constitute a theme throughout the programme, but it also left its mark in the picture language of some films: There are the vagaries of the visible and the invisible, the juxtaposition of watching and turning a blind eye, political, social, and everyday structures and rhythms as well as forms of filmic mediation. Ultimately, the eyes trail leads back to the viewer and his camera.
Who is watching? Who is narrating? And can you trust the pictures?
These scenes from the world and the woods, watched and staged without agitation, invite you to take a look yourself and possibly leave the cinema with a new view on everyday life and enviroment.
