Following an action-packed festival week and 25 films that entered the competition, the six jury members aged 12 to 14 decided on a winner.

First place, and thus the Mo & Friese prize trophy plus EUR 1250 went to
Pepe's Watch (Pepes Uhr)
The jury decided: »In this film by Michael Peretz, Gil Fermon plays David known as Dudu. Gil plays this role brilliantly. The plot and film are both vivid and well thought out. The story is a mixture of humour and seriousness. The topics including puberty, tension between mother and son, and the mother's helplessness were all portrayed superbly. Furthermore, the plot had outstanding moments of suspense and plenty of surprises.«

On 9.6. – his 15th birthday!! – leading actor Gil Fermon personally accepted the prize at Zeise Cinema.

Special mentions
Houdini´s Dog (Houdinis Hund)

This film by Sarah Johnsen consists of funny and exciting scenes that were shot with very good actors. We also enjoyed the fact that the Houdini legend was documented and integrated in the film in a very special way. Moreover, it depicts the difference and relationship between girls and boys at a certain age in a humorous way.

Special mentions
Calling Africa (Anruf nach Afrika)

It's a great idea to shoot a film like this revolving around a phone booth. A very serious problem – the xenophobia of certain people – was also dealt with. It was also great that the lead spoke mainly with his facial expressions, especially with his eyes. In the course of the film, Marvin, the main character, manages to come out of his shell. He changes as a result of making decisions. The way the colour red was used as a symbol was great. In the main, the film is set at a phone booth, but it is nevertheless really exciting.

Shorts For Shorts

Why are big brothers and sisters so mean and little ones so annoying? And without irritating tights, life is so-o-o much better, agreed? How do I go about finding my big sister again in a strange city? What does your first kiss taste like?

These are some of the questions causing children to lose sleep both in Germany and all over the world.
The Children’s Film Festival is presenting a full programme of funny, serious, exciting and surprising films and events from every corner of the globe for audiences from 6-14 years of age. This colourful collection of 30 feature films, animated films and do-cumentaries offers a unique peek into the world as children understand it (or don’t).

In addition:
• special screenings for schools
• special guests: directors and actors will be available to answer questions
• film workshops: putting together your own short film in less than a day;
2nd and 3rd June, only for school groups.
• The children’s jury selects a winner for the Mo & Friese Prize.
• Seminar on children’s film analysis on … and … for those working with children and other
interested parties.
• Venues: Zeise cinema, B-Movie, Honigfabrik, Anna-Susanna School, Lola Arts
Centre
The children’s film festival starts on the 1st of June 2003, at 14.00 in zeise cinema with a special screening of the feature film „Nenn mich einfach Axel”. Following the film, everyone is warmly invited to come along and enjoy a children’s festival with lots to see and do.
