NoBudget, but the film exists How can we describe a No Budget Programm, running seperately from the International Competition Programme? It is not enough to simply refer to the budget alone. While the necessity of financing a film from one's own pocket certainly limits technological elements in the production, it does demand a very individual creative process in order to provide substance for the imagination. Because of all their different ideas and experiments, it is not always easy to approach these often strange and distracting films with an open mind. To support this process, here are some of the filmmakers talking about their intentions and how they present their awareness under no budget constraints.. -I developed and produced the film myself. From the script to the final product, I worked with many people who out of pure idealism assisted me and allowed the film to be finished. Nobody was paid. -Okay. This is a no budget work because we do not need the usual mechanics to build fiction stories, (it's) just found information and a strong theoretical approach to film. -This is a no budget film because firstly it should encourage people to change their way of thinking. Secondly because it was shot just for fun, and thirdly because our kids got to know how a film is made. -100% self-produced independent film. -It was made without money, only with work! -I used the Super 8 camera my mother gave me for my twelfth birthday. -His first film. He taught himself everything and shot with the simplest of means. -My film is a no budget film because I made it at home and while editing my fingerprints got onto the original print, where they will remain forever. -Again using daily life, self, family and friends as a source for a personal documentary. -Working with Super 8 and a handheld tape recorder. -My film cost 1,000 pounds - my own savings - 50 pounds per minute. This is cheap filmmaking - but it doesn't look cheap. -Instantly transform an idea with the means available. -Because I paid for it, and didn't get paid for it. -Working in the construction industry finances the films. -No money in it - no money out of it. -Theory. -One-man crew. -For my video the idea of rethinking is important. The shots was accompanied by the themes of conception and confusion. Therefore: Content before form! -Spontaneously made. -Worked with a friend for five years on the film. -It's a home-made movie. The film was made out of an artistic necessity to express a state of mind. It can be called amateur, made for the love of... It is a kind of dream brought onto the screen. Its central idea is the journey, the inevitable necessity to search and not to get trapped or lost in life. -I paid for this film by living in a van after I finished production. I have not totalled the cost, because I have no money now, I send it to you instead of buying food. Film is life. -I'm a film amateur! That's free! -Not having a subsidised opera stage and a few Onyx 2 workstations from Silicon Graphics, I decided to take my daughter's Sony Home TV system with a slide-in VHS video unit and a 34 cm diagonal screen. -Only shot in sunlight. -Because it was produced by a small number of people with a minimal budget, with great personal effort and without any commercial motive. -The film was made with no commercial idea in mind. -There is no other alcohol than cheap red wine in this film. -From jumping into the swimming pool for underwater shots, to dipping my fingers in blue paint to make fingerprints on the film, to carefully placing sugar on the negative, I hand-crafted much of the film myself, working many hours, with little funding. -No budget - but the film exists... |
