Statement
Since its foundation ten years ago, sixpackfilm has always supported open-minded and critical works of art. In other words, art which tries to humanise society by showing the contradictions within that society rather than one which adapts to the affirmative mechanisms of the entertainment industry. It is our deeply held conviction that a confrontation with difficult art trains and educates your ability to differentiate, to recognise and respect others, those who are different, non-integrated. We are highly concerned about the current situation in Austria. This latent atmosphere of intolerance, xenophobia and nationalism and, lately, the open defamation of artists and non-conformist thinkers, is now even reflected politically in the Austrian governing coalition with Haider's Freedom Party. We hereby declare our complete opposition to this situation. And in this regard we intend to continue trying within our means to promote works of art which are critical and resist the status quo. Such art work is a message from a »different« Austria that should cross all national borders. At the same time it expresses our attitude of resistance within Austria as well, for instance with the spot ALARM by D. Brehm under the logo FILMART TAKES POSITION (see »The Art of Time Is Resistance«). CATASTROPHES CAN BE VOTED OUT OF OFFICE! sixpackfilm, Wien Contact: www.sixpackfilm.com |
The Art of Time Is Resistance At the end of March the film and video programme »The Art of the Time Is Resistance« was presented with great success at »Diagonale«, the festival of Austrian film in Graz. The programme went on to be awarded the »Prize for Innovative Cinema«. To express our solidarity with Austria's creative artists, the International Hamburg Short Film Festival is screening a selection of these films. Since right-wing Freedom Party rhetoric à la Joerg Haider - you'd better not bite the hand that feeds you - has already started to suppress critical art in Austria, opposition is absolutely vital. So please, bare your teeth and bite! The films are individual and at times spontaneous reactions to the political situation which has manifest itself in Austria since the beginning of the coalition between the Freedom Party and the conservatives on 3rd February 2000. They are ideas, short statements trying in a filmic manner to express a critical attitude towards a country going to pieces. One question recurs in several films, a question which reveals a desperate search: How could the Freedom Party have become so popular and who exactly votes for it? Other film documentations show the emotions, frustrations and perturbing thoughts of people in opposition to the government. |
