INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION
Jury: Buket Alakus, Karen Rais-Nordentoft, Nicolas Schmerkin, Fien Troch, Simon Elliss

Hamburg Short Film Award (EUR 2500.-)
»Best Man« by Becky Brazil (Scotland 2001, 35 mm, 16’45 Min)
Reason: For successfully challenging the often-explored trials of working class single-parenthood, with understated performances from the two leads and an usually restrained sensitivity towards the subject matter.

François Ode Award (EUR 1250.-)
»A Close Up On Bintou« by Fanta Régina Nacro (Burkina Faso 2001, 35 mm, 31’19 Min.)
Reason: Der François-Ode-Award is given to the shortfilm with the most outstanding humanitarian appeal. »A Close Up On Bintou« is awarded for its humorous and captivating interpretation of oppressive patriarchal values. A contemporary insight into domestic African culture with colourful characterisation and a tight narrative that never loses its focus.

NO BUDGET COMPETITION
Jury: Doro Carl, Wolfgang Büld, Emily Vey Duke

Jury Award (EUR 1250.-)
»The Portrait Of The Young Artist In The 21st Century by Borjan Zafirovski« (Macedonia 2001, betacam SP, 7’52 Min.)
Reason: Although we really loved a great number of films we saw in the No Budget program, we felt that »The Portrait of the young Artist in the 21th century« was especially fitting to win the prize. The film does something complex and meaningful: it makes a sharp critique of Hollywood cinema and the machine that produces it, while at the same time acknowleding the seductiveness of that world.

Hanse Short 2002 (EUR 1250,-)
»Nowhere Man« by Niclas Reed Middleton (Germany 2002, Mini DV, 8’30 Min)
Reason: The Jury has decided to give the prize to a film which tells the story of a man who begins a new career as a Busker. The strengths of Niclas Reed-Middleton’s film are human strengths: the ability to listen, to let the other finish what he has to say, and to observe. The filmmaker meets his protagonist in an unpressurized way using simple means which prove to be in keeping with the aesthetics of the film - form an content come together beautifully.
